Monkeys can now control robot arms using their mind. How cool is that. This is the first step towards helping amputee's with robotic prosthetics. But why stop there - why not go the whole hog. Eventually, the line between man and machine will become blurred, causing cyborg to come to pass, perhaps even enhancing their brain power with a Google chip embedded in their noggin.

How soon before this happens:

I just came across this site:

http://www.spreadfirefox.com/en-US/worldrecord/

The aim is to set the Guinness World Record for the most software downloaded in 24 hours. Seems a trifle geeky, but does point to not only the passion behind the browser, but also generally, how the mindset amongst geeks works. Admittedly, the challenge does come from a site that supports Firefox, so there is a bias towards this challenge, but still - with approx 50 thousand users helping make this a reality one can only wonder how this came to pass. Is it that Firefox is Open source, customizable, fast? This set of complex ones and zeros has changed Internet to a certain extent, and added a level of competition which has forced Microsoft and Apple to rethink their browser strategy.

It is kinda cool though, and I have pledged my support.

Forgot I had this on my PC. Taken from the sales conference in Malta back in Feb.

Good times, good times.

Howard from Tomorrows World was there too, but I don't have a pic with me and him...

Looks good, don't you think...

Bwaahahahahahahhahahahahahaha!

Some (very funny) prankster interrupts a press junket in the most innovative way.

20 seconds in on the vid here

Just found a clip for the next Futurama vid on YouTube - looks absolutely surreal. There is also an review on Screen Jabber, which is full of spoilers - if you're a fan then read it. If not, then wait till it comes out on doovde

This video popped up on the Internets over the weekend and has sent a bit of a wave through the mobile community. There is no clear picture as to what the device advertised actually is, with some pundits reckoning it's the X2, but the following is clear from the the advert: Sony are focusing on media, video with a dash of social networking on their mobile devices. True converged multimedia phones. Products like the N95 and iPhone have paved the way for this functionality to be readily accessible on mobile devices and now SE have followed suit by creating products that will deliver the full Mobile experience to users. Nokia have the Tube en route. LG have rumours of the Viewty mk 2 popping around. Motorola are, well, doing stuff in this area which is quite revolutionary (can't talk to much about it: I value my job!). Suffice it to say, these small baby steps in devices will ensure we'll hit Mobile 2.0 within the next 2 years. The only time I was this excited to be involved in a particular "space" was 6 years ago, in the web world. Times were changing then with alot of the enablers finally in place for Web 2.0 to start taking off. I think that similar enablers are now being put in place to enable a Mobile 2.0 experience to kick off. These are exciting times.

This just brings back so many memories

You've got to admire the irony of this report - police in the southern China discovered a factory that was making "Free Tibet" flags for export. Admittedly the manufacturers didn't know that the flags they were making were considered dissident materials, but I'd love to have seen the face of the gaffer when he saw a news report showing those flags being used for protests.

I'm not the only one who thinks that this advert is tosh - Alex Zane spent 10 minutes berating how shit the new Slimfast Advert really is. I wonder which tight arse ad exec let this one through? One can assume that they had bugger all budget left to create a decent advert so spunked 60% of their cash on a shite jingle.
Christ on a bike, I just can't get the bit about Funky Monkey out of my head.

I have a long and obvious (read: boring) set of requirements to scope out and have found the following tunes are very helpful

Biffy Clyro - Who's Got A Match

And anything by the Ting Tings

2-3 years ago, operators and vendors saw multimedia use on phone to be a driver for additional ARPU drivers - thus a big push on the consumer to join the MMS "revolution" - advertising pushed picture messaging to the forefront for the consumer and mobile operators made taking pictures and sending them on easier. This is now changing - the growing trend within high-tier smartphones nowadays is to move the phone to be closely coupled with the Internet. Data is the new focus for operators, and trying to get consumers to use more data on their mobile will mean more money for operators. People who can afford smartphones - the high tier (read expensive) phones - are more likely to surf when on the move, because they have a higher disposable income/more likely to checkout Lolcats on the move/are single and don't have anyone to talk to. However, current use cases regarding consumer's surfing on their mobile tend to focus more on active web interaction - a user surfing using Safari/Opera/IE; a user checking their Weather.com mobile application, etc - and vendors are looking towards new ways in which consumers can use their data bundles in a passive sense.

Now, the way I'd see that working is having an innovative and interactive home screen on an open OS (like Windows Mobile) - a home screen that is based upon a fixed amount of widgets that show data that the user really needs. For example, if it was up to me I'd have the following on a home screen:
  • Quick access to Phone Dialler
  • Quick access to Call list/Missed calls/Speed dial
  • Simple message centre allowing the user to consume SMS/MMS/Email
  • Battery Meter
  • Easy access to contacts
  • Quick access to camera
  • Weather/Stocks/Sport results display
It looks like I'm not the only one thinking of this - HTC and Sony have already gotten UI's out in the market that already achieve this:

I'd also have a secondary home screen which would include access to a larger back catalogue of widgets for key interweb services:

  • Digg
  • Reddit
  • Stumbleupon
  • Flickr
  • Blogspot
  • Ling
  • Facebook
  • Bebo
  • Myspace
  • Orkut
  • Pandora
  • LastFM
  • LinkedIn
  • Wikipedia
  • YouTube
  • MySpaceTV
  • Del.icio.us
  • Woot
  • Shazzam
  • Google
  • Yahoo
  • Remember The Milk
  • Craigslist
  • Ebay
  • Twitter
  • Google Maps
All of which could easily be encapsulated using an IE frame within Flashlite. All of this would drive ARPU for the Vendor, which would make any smartphone product that much easier to sell in. The Internet would be easy to access for the user and very discoverable, create and enhanced browsing experience, along with a rich messaging experience. I would also tie in the phone with the Vendors music shop - to allow users to download a music track on the go. If I was lucky enough for the phone to have wifi, I'd also chuck on an Internet radio app on their too.

All of this is coming soon enough, and all of it is to make consumers more reliant on their phone to be more proactive in their microtasking abilities - Create, Publish, Discuss®

Obviously, one would have to rely on the Vendor to actively market your new UI on your phone for it to really work - but you'd imagine that the prosumer segment would already know about this UI and would be clamouring at the bit to try it as the UI would be shiny, sparkly and generally very pretty.

Now, if a UI has neither of the above, or does the above to a certain extent then it's only fit for purpose for networks where data isn't a priority, or it will fail.

I may be stating the obvious here, and that the smart ones amongst my 3 readers may be sitting in their high backed chairs about to leave a comment using their iPhone to agree that I'm stating the obvious, but bear with me - there is a point here somewhere.
